Golf in Chiang Mai
While still a somewhat hidden gem in international golf tourism, Chiang Mai and the surrounding region of Northern Thailand have to be considered a prime golfing destination in Southeast Asia.
Northern Thailand has many advantages over the beach resorts and islands of Thailand due to a
- greater variety,
- a more dramatic mountainous landscape,
- a cooler and more stable climate,
- much lower costs and a
- better infrastructure.
There are some spectacular courses in the region and new ones are being build all the time to serve and ever greater number golf tourists.
These currently arrive mainly from Asian countries with high golfing costs such as Korea, Japan and increasingly, China.
Thailand still has a distinct tourist season and most visitors arrive between November and February, with a peak around New Year.
Golf during this period is splendid, with glorious sunshine on most days, pleasantly cool weather and lush greenery from the past rainy season. It is also by far the busiest time. Tee-time reservation is recommended on most golf courses in Chiang Mai and vicinity. It can be advisable to contact a specialized agent to get discount green fees and maybe some transportation thrown in.
Outside the high season golf courses are even quieter than those in the southern resort areas.
Especially the "rainy season" can be an excellent time to visit Northern Thailand for golf. Prices, for accommodation, golf and other services, are much lower, there are many greenfee promotions, the lush greenery is in full bloom, and the weather is still pleasant with most days sunny in the morning and possibly short showers in the afternoon.
Many golf courses have promotions during the low season, with rates sometimes dropping below 1000 Baht even for championship courses.
