Wat Chiang Man is one of the oldest and most important temples in Chiang Mai. Build in 1297, it was the home of King Mengrai while he constructed the city of Chiang Mai. The temple possesses one of the most famous and auspicious Buddha images in Thailand, the Phra Sae Tang Kamani (Crystal Buddha). The Elephant Chedi (Chedi Chang Lom) is the oldest structure of the temple. Fifteen life-sized brick-and-stucko elephants appear to support the upper structure that houses a relic chamber at the top.
