Chiang Mai Business Directory
Firefighters in Chiang Mai are a lot less busy than in the past, as houses are now built with bricks instead of wood, and regulation calls for larger distances between buildings.
Fire Brigade;Fire FightersOlder, small, low-profile hospital that may be not all bad.
Hospitals;Private HospitalsOlder low profile place that accepts pets to some extent while the lobby is home to a number of dogs. It's hard to make out that this is a hotel or other form of accommodation. Leafy and quiet near the south-western corner of the moat, right next to the Suan Buak Haad Park.
Hotels;Guesthouses;Cafes;Coffee ShopsStandard backpacker guesthouse with prices (and some facilities) stuck in the nineties. You get what you pay for so no push back via bad reviews. The location is not convenient for partying but good to get into the mountains quickly. Also, a tailor is available onsite who may fix your party-ripped clothes.

Cajun Food;Soul Food;Bar B-Q;Soul Kitchen;Gumbo;Ribs;Southern Food;Mexican Food;Soul Food Long established restaurant at a good riverside location that has some management and staffing issues, resulting in a less than stellar dining experience for many. Other riverside restaurants such as The Riverside are much better. Samsen Villa tries to be different such as with their large selection of sea food and sea fish dishes (a rarity in Chiang Mai), but it falls down with the lacklustre management and staff.
RestaurantsCustom picture framing with fast, friendly and cheap service. The shop has no ready-made frames but will custom-make each frame.
Picture Frames;Picture Framing;Custom Picture FramesKaraoke Clubs are ripoff dens for the uninitiated. Quick primer: Hostesses are paid per half hour or hour (about 250 per girl per hour in early 2015) to sit with guests. Drinks don't have to be purchased for the hostess inspite of their insistence. Buying "lady drinks" is a money pit. The mamasan (girl's manager) may expect a tip for suggesting girls. Don't spend hours in these places and obey the number one rule for bars: Don't fall in love with a girl. Pretty Woman does not exist. Further reading is here and here. And another 2015 example: Twodrunk aussies are bad news everywhere and will get into trouble in Thailand regardless, but here both sides were in the wrong.")
Karaoke ClubsAncient trinkets and Buddha amulets. Be sure to negotitate a good price and bring an expert along unless you're an expert yourself. Unlike larger Buddha images, Buddha amulets can be exported.
Antiques;Buddha AmuletsA nicely styled new resort hotel at the western moat, away from the tourist areas. Solid four star standard with a nice pool and a good price.
HotelsLow rates and a very Thai atmosphere with typical windows to the hallway. Check-out is an unusually early 10 am, so nightowls beware.
GuesthousesWualai is still not a perfect location but it's up and coming and gentrifying quickly (now even featuring a Ryokan). This is a new boutique hotel option in the area.
